Honorarium Program

Overview

To encourage high‑quality contributions, the Fish Disease Library provides small honorariums (similar to bug bounty programs) for contributors who write new disease entries, significantly improve existing content, or translate pages into additional languages.

Many open‑source projects use bounty or financial support programs to reward meaningful contributions. For example, the Apple Bounty Program rewards contributors for tasks ranging from simple documentation updates to adding new features; the amount of support depends on the task’s difficulty and contributions across various domains (including documentation) are eligible.

Our honorarium program is inspired by these models and aims to recognize the time and expertise of contributors.

Honorarium Tiers

Contribution type Amount (nok) Notes
New disease entry 1500 kr The entry must be original, comprehensive and follow the library’s style guidelines (see below). Only entries accepted and merged by reviewers are eligible.
Significant edit to an existing disease page 1000 kr Changes must meaningfully improve accuracy, completeness or clarity. Reviewers decide whether an edit qualifies as significant. Minor typo fixes and formatting tweaks are not eligible.
Translation (Norwegian or Spanish) 500 kr Provide a complete translation of an existing disease page into Norwegian or Spanish. Translations should be accurate, use consistent terminology and be submitted via pull request.
Bug or security issue report 500 kr Report a valid bug or security vulnerability that materially improves the quality, reliability, or safety of the library. Reports must include enough detail for the team to reproduce and verify the issue.

How to participate

  1. Find or propose a task. Browse open issues or create a new issue to propose a new disease entry, a significant edit, or a translation. Tag your issue accordingly.
  2. Discuss and assign. Comment on the issue indicating your interest. A maintainer will confirm the scope and assign the task.
  3. Follow style guidelines highlighted in our Github repository For new entries and significant edits, ensure your work includes:
    • Disease name – common and scientific names.
    • Causative agent – pathogen type (virus, bacterium, parasite, etc.).
    • Signs and symptoms – clinical presentation in affected fish.
    • Diagnosis – methods used to identify the disease.
    • Treatment and prevention – recommended management, treatments, and preventive measures.
    • References – cite reputable sources.
  4. Submit a pull request (PR). Fork the repository, commit your changes, and open a PR. Include the relevant issue number and describe your contribution.
  5. Wait for review. Maintainers will review your submission and may request revisions. Only PRs that are accepted and merged are eligible for honorariums.
  6. Receive honorarium. Once your contribution is accepted, a maintainer will contact you to arrange payment. Payments are sent as an honorarium, not employment, and contributors are responsible for any taxes.

Important considerations

  • Eligibility determination. Whether an edit is considered “significant” is at the discretion of the reviewers. We encourage you to discuss proposed changes beforehand to ensure they will qualify.
  • Budget constraints. Honorariums are subject to available funding and may be suspended if funds run out. We reserve the right to adjust amounts as needed.
  • Ownership and licensing. You retain ownership of your contributions but agree to license them under the project’s open‑source license (MIT) so they can be freely used and improved.
  • Fair play. Do not submit plagiarized or AI‑generated content without proper attribution. Contributors must follow our code of conduct and respect other users.
  • Taxes and legal compliance. Payments are processed as honorariums; contributors are responsible for reporting income and paying any applicable taxes.

This honorarium program takes inspiration from existing open‑source bounty initiatives, which show that a structured reward system can motivate contributions and improve project quality. We appreciate your willingness to help grow the Fish Disease Library!
